PhD position in AI for self configuration and management of IT systems

Job description

**Introduction**
One PhD position, sponsored by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Network 6G-TERRAIN, is offered at IBM Research Europe, Dublin.

The IBM Research Lab in Dublin was founded in 2011 and has consistently delivered major innovations in AI, security, hybrid cloud, and quantum computing.

As the only IBM Research lab in the European Union, the mission of the Dublin Lab, in addition to pursuing cutting-edge research for the future of computing, is to cultivate close relationships with academic and industrial partners, be one of the premier places to work for world-class researchers, and help drive Europe’s innovation agenda.

The Doctoral Candidate will join the recently launched 6G-TERRAIN Doctoral Network, which is funded by the Horizon Europe Research Program through the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions, under the title: 6G TERrestrial & non-teRrestrial integration through an AI-Native architecture.

The 6G-TERRAIN project is a collaboration of six outstanding EU academic and private-sector partners that redefines network design through the Network of Networks vision.

By integrating terrestrial and non-terrestrial systems with AI and advanced sensing, it drives innovation towards the 6G era and fosters the development of next-generation expertise.
**Your role and responsibilities**
The Doctoral Candidate, hosted by IBM Research Europe (Ireland), will undertake research on advanced Native AI and Generative AI approaches for 6G telecommunication networks.

The project will focus on:
1.GenAI- and Agentic AI-driven resource management, enabling adaptive and resilient 6G network operations.
2.Native AI optimization techniques to improve performance while reducing complexity in highly dynamic environments.
3.Self-configuration and self-management mechanisms, allowing networks to autonomously detect, adapt to, and resolve resource conflicts.

The expected outcomes of this project are:

i.

Composable analytics schemes based on Agentic AI, leveraging meta-learning to dynamically integrate multiple AI-driven functions to achieve resource optimization and efficiency.

ii.

Validation results, demonstrating the efficiency and robustness of resource allocation, conflict resolution, and self-optimization under realistic 6G scenarios.

The Doctoral Candidate will be offered a full-time contract, as well as enrolment in a PhD program.

The Doctoral Candidate Fellowship is offered under very attractive employment conditions and competitive salary, which includes all employer and employee’s taxes and contributions, in compliance with the Marie Curie Innovative Doctoral Networks.

In addition to developing their research project, the Doctoral Candidate will:
•Learn to master academic writing and author journal publications.
•Present their work at project workshops, plenary meetings, and top-tier international conferences.
•Participate in secondments to consortium partners.
